Foundations of Round Dancing: Two Step and Waltz

Dennis has been teaching Round Dance classes since 1976 and has been repeatedly asked by students for recommendations of Round Dance books. Unfortunately, there aren't very many books to choose from. He found most of them to be very good references, but these aren't necessarily the best books for beginning dancers. There have been a few books over the years that have been good for the beginning dancers, but are no longer in print.

His 2003-2004 class was no different in these requests. He provided a few handouts, but mostly referred the students to the ROUNDALAB standards.

These requests, coupled with suggestions from a focus group that he and his wife had joined, proved to be a "Well, duh!" moment: "I should write the requested book for the beginner Round Dancer student!"

His goal in writing this book is not to produce a book on how to dance nor a dry reference book, but to provide reminders to the student of topics mentioned in Round Dance class. Dancing is not something that can be learned from a book, but a book can certainly reinforce what is being learned on the dance floor.

He hopes that Round Dance students will find reinforcement of topics learned in their classes, and perhaps that Round Dance teachers may find different perspectives to aid them in their instruction.

He collected the material for this book over the years, and has generally long forgotten where it came from originally. Much of it came from other Round Dance instructors, who got it from yet other Round Dance instructors, so it is very difficult to determine where it originated. This is one of the most enjoyable things about most Round Dance instructors: they are more than willing to share their tricks of the trade. Most Round Dance instructors recognize that they are in a cooperative competition with the other instructors. The more they share the more they help each other and the Round Dance activity.
